Russell beat out Austin Mack, the fourth-year senior who followed Kalen DeBoer from Washington and entered the summer as the presumed veteran answer at the position. Instead, DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb stayed publicly even-handed for months, repeatedly insisting the race was too close to call. Even after Alabama's second fall scrimmage at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Aug. 20, DeBoer declined to tip his hand, saying the staff "can go in with either one of them."
Behind the scenes, the momentum had shifted. Rumors of Russell taking the lead swirled through the final weeks of camp, and quarterback coach Bryan Ellis gave the strongest hint yet when he told Yea Alabama why the decision broke the way it did.

The tools were never the question for Russell. He arrived in Tuscaloosa as the highest-rated prospect of the DeBoer era, ranked the No. 2 overall recruit in the class of 2025 and the No. 1 player in Texas. During his senior season at Duncanville, he threw for 3,652 yards with 52 touchdowns and just two interceptions while completing 71.5 percent of his passes, a performance that earned him the 2025 Gatorade National High School Player of the Year award.
As a freshman in 2025, Russell appeared in two games during blowouts, completing 11 of 15 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns while adding three rushes for 17 yards. But the flashes came with a catch: he was the first quarterback eliminated from Alabama's 2025 three-man race, with the staff citing a lack of command in the huddle.
That was the weakness he attacked this offseason. By April, DeBoer was already seeing the growth, saying Russell was "almost to the point now where he doesn't have to think when he says play calls." The spring game backed it up. At A-Day on April 11, Russell completed 21 of 33 passes for 242 yards, four touchdowns and an interception — though it should be noted Mack was banged up and received far fewer reps.
The command issue, once his biggest hurdle, is now the reason he's the starter. A dual-threat with legitimate downfield arm talent who no longer has to think in the huddle is a dangerous combination in DeBoer's offense.

Alabama's choice signals a bet on ceiling over experience. Mack, a veteran who knew the system and gave the Tide a safer floor, now moves into a backup role for a program with national championship expectations. Russell's upside — the mobility, the arm, the playmaking that produced 52 touchdowns in a single high school season — is what separates Alabama's offense from the pack in the expanded SEC.
Nick Saban, now operating outside the program, said in late July that he liked what he saw from Russell in the battle, noting multiple quarterbacks on the roster were capable of winning games under DeBoer.
